Yamaha Powersports History
The Yamaha Motor Company, a 1955 offshoot of the Yamaha Corporation, has spent the past sixty-three years building powersports vehicles that are powerful and able to withstand the hardest riding conditions. Their decades of manufacturing experience have made Yamaha vehicles reliable and trusted by customers all over the world. America’s Motor Sports Dickson is your Tennessee Yamaha dealer, which is what compelled us to present this brief look into the Yamaha Motor Company’s illustrious history.Formation
Torakusu Yamaha established his Yamaha Corporation to manufacture musical instruments in 1887 in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture. The legacy of their piano and organ production is imprinted in the company’s logo, a circle of three overlapping tuning forks, like those used to tune pianos. After World War II, Japanese companies all over the country looked to broaden their product lines in order to generate profits and make use of wartime manufacturing machines. Genichi Kawakami, Yamaha’s president at this time, decided to convert some of his musical instrument production lines to small engines, especially those used on motorcycles.
In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company was split off from Yamaha Corporation, becoming successful very quickly with its two-stroke engine motorcycles. By 1968, four-stroke engines rolled off the assembly lines in ever more popular motorcycle designs.
1980s Expansion
Following a few decades of motorcycle manufacturing, the Yamaha Motor Company further diversified its manufacturing by entering both the personal watercraft and powersports vehicle markets. They designed the WaveRunner watercraft for release in 1986 which changed the game when it came to marine powersports. Their Banshee ATV, released in 1987, was similarly successful, proving that Yamaha is adaptable and able to change with the times.Modern Era
The Yamaha Motor Company leads the way to this day in the production and design of motor vehicles. Yamaha motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles are used in many popular races, while Yamaha watercraft have improved dramatically since their introduction in the 1980s. While the parent company continues to make musical instruments in addition to electronic devices, the Yamaha Motor Company produces snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, personal watercraft, automobile engines, and motorcycles. This manufacturing diversity demonstrates the Yamaha commitment to remaining versatile in an ever-changing market.Think a Yamaha vehicle sounds like the right fit for you?
